Renowned chef, author, filmmaker, and humanitarian Vikas Khanna has expanded his culinary empire with the opening of Bungalow, an Indian restaurant located in New York City’s East Village. Opened on March 23, 2024, Bungalow offers an immersive dining experience that pays homage to India’s rich culinary heritage while embracing contemporary influences.

A Tribute to Indian Club Culture

Bungalow draws inspiration from India’s Raj-era country clubs, known for their opulent settings and fusion of Indian and British culinary traditions. The restaurant’s name itself is derived from the Bengali word “Bangla,” meaning a type of house, reflecting Khanna’s desire to create a space that feels like home. The interior, designed by Shaila Rizvi, sister of co-founder Jimmy Rizvi, features pale pink walls, colorful murals, and a bar with carved panels, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that evokes the charm of vintage Indian clubhouses (source).

Culinary Journey Across India’s 28 States

The menu at Bungalow is a culinary journey through India’s 28 states, showcasing time-honored recipes and reimagined classics. Khanna’s innovative approach is evident in dishes like the Kiss of Kashmir, featuring lotus roots, kidney beans, radish-walnut raita, and pickled turnips, and the Shrimp Balchao Cones, combining shellfish with eggs, dairy, and sesame (source). Other notable offerings include the Lamb Seekh Kabab with kumquat pickle, plum chutney, peanut crumble, and cheese filling, and the Hyderabadi Chicken Biryani infused with mint, crispy onions, and saffron.

Vegetarian and vegan diners are also well-catered for, with options like the Eggplant Bharta, featuring Japanese eggplant, smoked onions, peas, tomatoes, and cilantro, and the Spice Roasted Pineapple, prepared with coconut, lemon, mustard seeds, and curry leaves. The beverage program complements the menu with artisanal cocktails inspired by regional Indian spices, alongside an extensive selection of wines and non-alcoholic beverages (source).

A Personal Milestone for Vikas Khanna

For Khanna, Bungalow represents a deeply personal project. The restaurant opened on March 23, coinciding with what would have been the 50th birthday of his late sister, Radhika, to whom he credits much of his success. This tribute underscores the familial and cultural connections that permeate Bungalow’s concept and execution (source).

Khanna has described Bungalow as his “most heartfelt and most innovative restaurant yet,” and has indicated that it may be his final venture in the restaurant industry. He remains actively involved in the daily operations, often spending several hours in the kitchen and engaging with diners, ensuring that the restaurant maintains the high standards for which he is known (source).

Critical Acclaim and Recognition

Since its opening, Bungalow has garnered significant attention and praise from both diners and critics. In June 2024, it was added to the Michelin Guide for New York City, and in December 2024, it received the prestigious Michelin 2024 Bib Gourmand Award, recognizing its exceptional quality and value.

Critics have lauded Bungalow for its immersive dining experience and innovative menu. Chandler Presson of Gotham Magazine praised the restaurant for its ability to “transport diners to a time and place where tradition and modernity beautifully collide.”

A New Chapter in Culinary Excellence

With Bungalow, Vikas Khanna once again proves that he is not just a chef but a storyteller, weaving narratives of culture, community, and cuisine into every plate. The restaurant has already established itself as a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an unforgettable culinary adventure.

As Khanna himself puts it, “Food is the most powerful way to connect people, and Bungalow is my way of inviting the world to experience the beauty of South Asia.”

If you’re in New York City, make your way to Bungalow—a place where every meal feels like coming home.
