BERLIN – FEBRUARY 12: Actor Shahrukh Khan attends the ‘My Name Is Khan’ Premiere during day two of the 60th Berlin Film Festival at the Berlinale Palast on February 12, 2010 in Berlin, Germany

On the evening of May 5, 2025, the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City transformed into a dazzling runway of haute couture and cultural statements for the annual Met Gala. This year’s theme, “Tailored for You”, paid homage to the transformative power of fashion and the legacy of Black tailoring. Amid the sea of luminaries from Hollywood, fashion, and global arts, one debut stood out as a moment of cultural pride and historic resonance—Shah Rukh Khan, the “King of Bollywood,” made his long-anticipated Met Gala debut.

The King Steps onto Fashion’s Biggest Stage

Shah Rukh Khan’s arrival sent a ripple of excitement across both the media and the fashion elite. Known for his cinematic charisma and magnetic presence, Khan turned heads with an ensemble that was as refined as it was regal. Crafted by Indian fashion powerhouse Sabyasachi Mukherjee, his custom look masterfully merged Indian sartorial heritage with modern tailoring.

Khan wore a full-length black overcoat tailored from Tasmanian wool, its structure sharp yet flowing. Japanese horn buttons added a global touch of elegance, while a silk shirt, tapered trousers, and a structured satin kamarbandh (waist sash) grounded the outfit in South Asian tradition. The look was adorned with exquisite accessories—a multi-layered set of talismanic chains, a custom diamond-encrusted ‘K’ pendant, a jeweled star-shaped brooch, and an 18k gold cane encrusted with precious gemstones.

In an exclusive interview prior to the gala, Khan revealed that it was his children—Suhana, Aryan, and AbRam—who encouraged him to make this debut. “I am shy, but I’ll be cool on the carpet—for my kids,” he said with a laugh, reminding fans why he remains one of the most beloved stars not only in India, but globally.

South Asian Celebrities Who Shone on the Met Gala Carpet

Khan was not the only South Asian to leave an indelible mark on the 2025 Met Gala. A new wave of artists, designers, and influencers of South Asian descent walked the red carpet, showcasing the vibrancy and diversity of the diaspora.

Deepika Padukone

A Met Gala regular, Deepika stunned once again—this year in a breathtaking Anamika Khanna creation. The look featured a sculptural ivory bodice with zardozi detailing, and a voluminous silk organza train that flowed like poetry. Her jewelry, curated by Amrapali, included temple-inspired earrings and a choker reminiscent of Mughal royalty.

Mindy Kaling

Mindy brought drama and charm in equal measure, donning a jewel-toned ensemble by designer Prabal Gurung. The structured blazer-style gown, complete with exaggerated shoulders and a cinched waist, was a nod to the power suit, elevated for couture. Her glam included a deep berry lip and cascading curls that felt both classic and bold.

Alia Bhatt

Representing the new wave of Bollywood fashionistas, Alia Bhatt wore a pearl-encrusted sari-inspired gown by Tarun Tahiliani. The outfit seamlessly blended traditional draping with a red carpet silhouette, and her minimal styling—wet-look hair, nude makeup, and a singular emerald ring—let the craftsmanship shine.

Riz Ahmed

British-Pakistani actor and activist Riz Ahmed once again used fashion to make a quiet political statement. His outfit, designed by Priya Ahluwalia, featured repurposed textiles from South Asian refugee communities, embroidered with phrases of unity and resilience. Paired with polished boots and vintage cufflinks, Riz brought an understated, deeply meaningful look to the gala.

Simone Ashley

The Bridgerton star radiated confidence in a custom look by Gaurav Gupta. Ashley’s gown featured Gupta’s signature structured waves and a futuristic neckline, evoking the Met Gala’s theatrical spirit while staying rooted in South Asian sculptural design techniques.

A Cultural Milestone in Fashion

Shah Rukh Khan’s presence at the Met Gala signifies more than just a personal style triumph—it represents a cultural shift. For decades, South Asian stars have commanded the box office, literary world, and tech industries, but red carpet representation has often lagged behind. This year’s event felt like a tipping point. The prominence of South Asian celebrities, designers, and artisans on one of the most-watched fashion stages in the world was a celebration of diasporic excellence.

With stars like Khan and Padukone leading the way—and designers like Sabyasachi, Gaurav Gupta, and Prabal Gurung continuing to redefine global fashion—it’s evident that South Asian aesthetics are no longer “emerging”; they are essential.

Looking Forward

As the flashbulbs faded and guests made their way into the museum’s curated exhibits, one thing remained clear: South Asians are not only participating in global cultural conversations—they are shaping them. And Shah Rukh Khan’s debut is a symbol of this evolving narrative.

His children may have nudged him onto the carpet, but his presence there was long overdue. In true SRK fashion, he didn’t just attend—he arrived, he dazzled, and he made history.
