Meet Dr. Gitanjali Rao—a total rockstar in science, tech, and social change. She’s not just a whiz in the lab; she’s a powerful voice for Gen Z innovators everywhere, especially in the South Asian community.
From Curious Kid to Science Icon
Born in 2005 to Indian immigrant parents, Gitanjali was always super into science. With her family’s support, she started experimenting with STEM projects early on. By 12, she created “Tethys,” a device that detects lead in drinking water—yeah, you read that right. Inspired by the Flint water crisis, her invention earned her the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist” in 2017, and she’s been on fire ever since.
Breaking the Mold and Inspiring the Squad
But Gitanjali’s not just about tech—she’s all about lifting others up too. She’s mentored over 50,000 students worldwide, encouraging them to turn their ideas into real solutions. With her TED Talks, media features in TIME and Forbes, and constant drive to empower others, she’s become a global youth icon.
In 2020, TIME magazine named her the first-ever “Kid of the Year”—no big deal, right?
Tackling Big Issues with Tech
Gitanjali’s work is all about finding solutions for real-world problems. Besides Tethys, she’s created “Epione,” an app designed to support people battling opioid addiction, and “Kindly,” an AI-powered tool that helps stop cyberbullying. Basically, she’s out here making the internet—and the world—a better place.
Staying True to Her Roots
Despite her fame, Gitanjali proudly reps her South Asian heritage. She often credits her Indian upbringing for teaching her values like education, resilience, and social responsibility. Her story shows how powerful it is to blend culture with innovation.
What’s Next?
Gitanjali’s not slowing down anytime soon. She’s still working hard to inspire young minds, teaching students how to identify problems and build solutions. Her message is simple: anyone can change the world—you just need the drive to start.
Dr. Gitanjali Rao is living proof that Gen Z is out here doing BIG things. Her journey reminds us that with creativity, compassion, and courage, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.
